Belted Kingfishers are one of the few bird species where females are more colorful than the males, having a second cinnamon-colored belt and flanks that males lack. Both parents excavate upward sloping tunnels in muddy or sandy banks to build their nest in. This female often perches here above Chauncey Creek, ready to plunge headfirst into the water below for passing fish. |
