Northern Shrikes are predatory songbirds, catching small rodents, birds, and bigger insects. They are famous for impaling their prey on barbed wire, thorns, and spines as a makeshift larder. I heard this bird before I saw it—soft warbly phrases and whistles sounding much like a vireo, who shrikes happen to be close relatives of. |
