I found this American Bittern stalking the ice by the salt pannes on Plum Island. Its neck would eerily protrude out of the dry spartina to suddenly retract and disappear and then show up elsewhere, such remarkable camouflage in motion. It made a few strikes at the edge of the ice, but whatever it caught was too small to distinguish—perhaps a snail or small crustacean. |
