White-breasted Nuthatches are friendly and familiar backyard birds, getting their name from the habit of jamming seeds and nuts into crevices, then pecking away with their sharp upturned bills to “hatch” them. Oldtimers sometimes call them Devil Down-heads for being as much at home upside-down as right-side-up. |
