I found these 4 Harlequin Duck drakes cruising the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine. The 2nd from the right without the chestnut flanks is a subadult male. Females are browner and plainer with a round white spot behind the ear. Like Eiders and Scoters, Harlequin Ducks dive for crustaceans and molluscs off the rocky bottom. On the East Coast their numbers are declining. |
